Beware the large shards of bone

My dogs absolutely love this blend. However, I don't love picking out the large pieces of bone. I am concerned that they are weight bearing bones which should NOT be fed to dogs as they can cause blockages due to their high density. Some of these shards were very sharp and 5/8" long. They should not be in this mix as far as I'm concerned. The provider needs to be made aware in case their equipment is dull or malfunctioning. I reached out via messaging here and never received a response which is disappointing. Also, the mix has a tripe smell to it. I couldn't put my finger on it until I got some freeze dried tripe and I recognized the smell. It isn't as strong but it's definitely there. I don't see tripe in the ingredients, so I would just like to know why it smells like tripe. It doesn't give me a ton of confidence feeding this to my pups when I have so many unanswered questions. I have 20lbs left and i'm not feeding it because I'm so tired of picking out the bone.

    Hi Christine
The bones in the beef blend do not typically come from weight bearing bones, although once the bone has been ground up it is not going to matter. Ground bone is not going to cause a blockage nor is it a risk to the dog as they were literally designed by nature to consume raw bone. Dogs are at far more of a risk of a blockage from non digestible items like cooked or roasted bones, socks, plastic and fabric toys, pee pee pads and items from kids toys or the trash If you are concerned about the size of the bone chunks may I recommend the PMR blends as they typically have a finer grind to the bones in them. You might also consider switching to a boneless blend and adding a bone source such as our Better Bones product in our supplement section. You will often need to also add a source of organ as many of the boneless blends do not contain organ. Just be sure to read the product description on the website. Also Dr. Judy Jasek, DVM wrote this article regarding her 5lb Chihuahua's eating the beef blend with bones. https://rawdogfoodandco.com/pet-health-and-safety/

Would be a five star but …

This blend has large Chu cans of bone in it, so I can’t recommend it, especially for smaller dogs. Some pieces are “shard” like, so be careful. I pick them out. Otherwise, a solid blend.

    Hi Nicole
Try the Beef PMR which has a finer grind than the standard Beef Blend. Although all raw bones are soft, easily digestible, dogs instinctively know what to do they either spit out the bones or simply swallow. Unfortunately, fear of bones in blends is moving the industry to remove beef bones in blends. This will of course have a negative outcome from a nutritional component. The chocking and blockage issues in pets are mostly a result of consuming non digestible items like cooked or roasted bones, socks, plastic and fabric toys, pee pee pads and items from kids toys or the trash. One other great note dogs esophagus expands 2.5 times its size so they can eat a species appropriate diet as they are designed. The great news is we have a huge selection of blends so try the PMR categories I think you will really like those!

    Great blend

My dog is loving this so far! We just got it so I’ve only given it to her twice but she gobbles it up! And it seems she has less waste than when eating kibble!

The best food base out there

I would say it's delicious, but I'm not partial to the bone meal personally. My dogs, however, LOVE IT.
